Super Sativa Seed Club

Super Sativa Seed Club is one of the world’s first seed banks. By the mid-01s, every grower knew about SSSC. It all started when “Sam the Skunkman” gave Karel Schelfhout, one of the founders of SSSC and a former squatter, the original Haze and Skunk #XNUMX after moving from California. Karel used Sam’s genetics to create some of the most illustrious strains that would later become Super Sativa Seed Club.

The only seed bank that existed before SSSC was Nevil’s, called “The Seedbank.” Founded by Nevil Schoenmaker, The Seedbank was the first functioning international seed bank in the world. Nevil combined the original 10 Haze seeds he received from Sam the Skunkman with seeds he collected on a strain hunt in Afghanistan to begin his famous seed collection. The Seedbank is best known for Nevil’s Haze strain, but Nevil was also the first to use the infamous Ruderalis strain in his breeding work. The seeds Karel received from Nevil, combined with those he received from Sam, became the first breed and foundation for the Super Sativa Seed Club.

Between 1985 and 1987, SSSC genetics pushed the boundaries of breeding and cultivation worldwide. When High Times magazine published a cover story about the Dutch seed bank, sales skyrocketed. Within two years, SSSC sold millions of seeds in the US, Europe and Asia. After two very successful years, the venture ended. The founders went their separate ways and most of SSSC’s seed collection was lost.

“Weeds don’t die” is a literal translation of the Dutch expression “onkruid vergaat niet”. And this is exactly what happened. After the SSSC adventure was over, Karel saved a very important plant, a daughter of the original Haze and Skunk#01. Karel kept cuttings of this precious plant for over 30 years and named it “Old School Haze”. The remaining SSSC genetics are the stuff of legends – even now many varieties carry DNA from the original SSSC seeds. All plants with a Haze or Skunk flavour probably have grandparents born from SSSC seeds.

In the 90s, Karel and his team focused on genetic conservation and breeding new cannabis strains for Amsterdam coffee shops. At the same time, Karel was working on developing advanced indoor cultivation techniques, which made him an authority in the field of elite genetics, breeding and cultivation. It was around this time that Karel's son Kees, who had been working and growing his own plants in Barcelona, joined him. Their products are a big hit in cannabis social clubs, especially their flagship strain, Karel's Haze. Kees represents a new generation of breeders who work with great passion and the ambition to keep the legend alive.

In the 1980s, Karel was part of an underground squatting scene where smoking marijuana was part of everyday life. Curious about the possibilities of growing marijuana themselves, early growers were looking for new techniques for growing quality marijuana indoors. Karel began experimenting with indoor growing facilities in abandoned houses. He used professional grow lamps, developed mineral fertilizers and grew the plants on rock wool. This soilless growing technique was copied from the nearby greenhouse agricultural industry.

Kees always wondered where his father had bought the weed with that old-school quality taste. In 2015 he discovered that his father had been secretly growing OSH in a hidden location for all these years. As a breeder himself, Kees became convinced of the idea that the old genetics were very valuable. He set out to reintroduce the original Haze taste and quality. Thanks to his efforts, SSSC is now able to sell original OSH seeds, in addition to many other special genetics from the old seed collection.

SSSC is proud to have been honored as a member of the esteemed club of pioneers in the High Times Hall of Fame.
